Kolkata Law College Horror: 24-Year-Old Law Student Allegedly Gang-Raped on Campus by Trinamool Leader and Students
In a shocking incident that has triggered public outrage and political tremors, a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College campus in Kolkata. The accused? Three men — including two students and a college staffer, who is also a student wing leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Brutality Behind Locked Gates
The horrifying assault reportedly took place on Wednesday evening, between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm, inside the college guard room. According to the woman's FIR, she had visited the campus around noon to fill out exam-related forms. Initially seated in the college union room, she was later forcibly taken to the security guard’s room after the main accused allegedly ordered the college gate to be locked.
The three accused have been identified as:
Monojit Mishra, 31 — former student, current general secretary of the South Kolkata unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)
Zaib Ahmed, 19 — a first-year student
Pramit Mukherjee, 20 — another student
All three were arrested on Thursday, with Mishra and Ahmed picked up from Kasba, and Mukherjee nabbed from his residence around 12:30 am.
Victim’s Shocking Testimony
In her gut-wrenching complaint, the woman stated that Mishra had previously proposed marriage, but became furious after she rejected him, revealing she had a boyfriend. She claimed she was then locked inside, threatened with death, and told her parents would be arrested if she didn’t comply.
“I touched his feet, begged him to let me go, but they dragged me to the guard room, stripped me, and raped me,” she alleged.
Even more disturbing, she revealed that the assault was filmed, and the accused threatened to leak the footage if she didn’t stay quiet. She tried to resist and escape but suffered injuries after being attacked with a hockey stick.
The accused reportedly demanded she prove loyalty to the Trinamool’s student wing, turning the assault into a horrific blend of sexual violence and political coercion.
Police Investigation Underway
Police swiftly began a probe, securing the crime scene, conducting a preliminary medical exam, and recording statements from multiple witnesses. Mobile phones belonging to the accused were also seized for forensic analysis. The investigation will remain active until the forensic reports are complete.
Political Firestorm Erupts
This heinous crime has ignited a massive political showdown. The Trinamool Congress issued a statement condemning the act and promised that the “full weight of the law” would be imposed on the guilty.
Meanwhile, the BJP launched a counterattack, sharing images of Monojit Mishra with senior Trinamool leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, an MP and nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In a controversial remark, Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee admitted the incident was “shameful,” but claimed, “It’s not possible to deploy police in every college… male colleagues must protect female students… women must fight back.”
On the other hand, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari blasted the Kolkata Police, blaming them for not being present. “The police were in Digha for Rath Yatra. What were they doing there while crimes like this happen here?” he asked.
Echoes of Past Crimes and National Outcry
The case has chilling parallels to the RG Kar Medical College gang-rape and murder from six months ago that sparked nationwide protests. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the current case as further proof that West Bengal has become a nightmare for women under Mamata Banerjee’s regime.
NCW Steps In for Justice
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has stepped in, demanding a time-bound probe from the Kolkata Police Commissioner. The NCW also insisted on medical, legal, and psychological support for the survivor and urged compensation under Section 396 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
