India Women Humiliate England in T20I Opener — Mandhana’s Blazing Ton & Charani’s Dream Debut Rock Trent Bridge!
The Indian women’s cricket team pulled off an absolute masterclass at Trent Bridge on June 28, handing England their biggest defeat ever in Women’s T20I history. While the men were licking their wounds after a painful Test loss at Headingley, the women showed the world how it's done — and how!
Smriti Mandhana, leading the side in place of the injured Harmanpreet Kaur, smashed a record-breaking century, while debutant Sree Charani turned the second innings into a personal highlight reel with a sensational 4-wicket haul.
Mandhana Turns Up the Heat with a Magical 112
It wasn’t the best start for India — just before the toss, news broke that Harmanpreet would miss the match due to a head injury picked up during warm-ups. That could've rattled any team. But not this one.
Mandhana, cool and composed as ever, stepped up — and lit up Trent Bridge with pure class.
Even though the opening overs were a little slow (India scored just 47 in the powerplay), Mandhana stayed patient. Then came the seventh over — and she exploded! She went after England’s best spinner, Sophie Ecclestone, smashing two sixes and a four in the same over. From there, it was all fireworks.
She brought up her 31st T20I half-century and then kept going. With Harleen Deol at the other end — who made full use of her unexpected opportunity — the duo stitched a rapid fifty-run stand.
Eventually, Mandhana raised her bat for a magnificent hundred, becoming only the second Indian woman to score a T20I century. She was finally dismissed in the last over for a blazing 112, but by then, the damage was done. India had piled on a massive 210/5 in 20 overs.
Charani’s Dream Debut Wrecks England’s Chase
If England had any hopes of chasing that target, they were dashed almost immediately.
The pitch? Still great for batting. The problem? India’s bowlers were fired up — and none more than Sree Charani, playing her very first international match.
It started with Amanjot Kaur striking in the opening over. Then Danielle Wyatt-Hodge fell on the very next ball in the second. Panic mode: activated.
Only Nat Sciver-Brunt looked solid, smashing a fighting 66 off 33 balls, but she was alone in the fight. Deepti Sharma chipped in with a key wicket, and then came the Charani Show.
She cleaned up Alice Capsey to start things off, and just kept going. Her final figures? A dreamlike 4 wickets for just 12 runs. She even removed Sciver-Brunt and Lauren Bell, leaving England all out for a paltry 113 in 14.5 overs.
India Go 1-0 Up — Eyes on Bristol Next
With this crushing 97-run victory, India lead the series 1-0, and the momentum is firmly in their corner.
The second T20I heads to Bristol on July 1, and if this match was anything to go by, England better come prepared — because this Indian women’s team isn’t messing around.
