A 27-year-old man clad in body armor and wielding an M4 assault rifle unleashed terror Monday evening inside a Midtown Manhattan office building, killing four people, including an off-duty NYPD officer, before turning the gun on himself, authorities confirmed. Another victim remains critically injured.

The mass shooting erupted just before 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Ave. and East 52nd Street, a high-rise that houses the headquarters of Blackstone and the NFL, according to sources cited by ABC News. It’s still unclear whether these firms—or any specific office—were targeted.

The shooter, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a Las Vegas resident, reportedly barricaded himself on the 33rd floor, where police later found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed during a press conference.

Initial investigations revealed Tamura drove cross-country from Nevada in a BMW, legally carrying a Nevada concealed weapons permit, according to Tisch. “We believe this was a lone shooter,” she stated.

Surveillance footage captured Tamura emerging from his vehicle, rifle in hand, and walking toward the building. He stormed into the lobby, immediately opening fire on an NYPD officer and riddling the area with bullets.

Tamura proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard, then rode up to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person before ending his own life with a chest wound, Tisch said.

Authorities are now trying to determine whether Tamura had a specific motive for heading to the 33rd floor, which is home to Rudin Management, a real estate firm.

A subsequent search of Tamura’s BMW revealed a rifle case, loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescription medication in his name. Tisch confirmed Tamura had a documented history of mental illness.

While the exact motive remains under investigation, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said federal authorities are working closely with the NYPD.

In total, five lives were lost, including the shooter. Mayor Eric Adams condemned the tragedy as a "violent, despicable act."

Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a member of the 47th Precinct, who had immigrated from Bangladesh. Islam had served nearly four years and was working security off-duty at the time of the attack.

“Earlier tonight, I met with the officer’s family,” said Adams. “I told them he was a hero. We deeply admire his bravery.”

Officer Islam leaves behind a wife, two young sons, and a third child on the way.

Both Officer Islam and a surviving civilian male were rushed to New York Presbyterian, where the civilian remains in critical but stable condition.

Two additional victims—a male and female civilian—were pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, while another female victim was found fatally shot on the 33rd floor.

Eyewitness Jessica Chen, who was inside the building during the chaos, described the terrifying lockdown: “The only thing between me and the door was a flipped-over chair,” she recalled. “I texted my parents, ‘I love you.’”

She added, “Nothing can describe that feeling.” Chen reflected on school active shooter drills and said it was tragic that such scenarios have become something "all Americans now mentally prepare for."

Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed she had been briefed on the tragedy.

In the aftermath, KPMG, one of the building’s other tenants, issued a statement: “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families in this horrific act. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of security personnel and law enforcement.”

Back in Las Vegas, multiple squad cars from the Metro Police Department were spotted outside the gated neighborhood where Tamura reportedly lived.

Detectives are working nonstop to build a comprehensive profile of the shooter, including how and where he acquired the high-powered firearm used in the attack.

Investigators are now poring through thousands of surveillance feeds, reconstructing Tamura’s every move, minute by minute, as they attempt to unravel the full picture behind this shocking act of violence.
