Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines After Russian Threats: “We’re Protecting Our People”

Trump Sends Nuclear Submarines in Fiery Response to Russian Threats

Donald Trump has confirmed that he has deployed nuclear-capable submarines to “strategic regions” following a provocative threat from Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, who hinted at the possibility of a nuclear strike amid escalating tensions over the Ukraine war.

In a bold Truth Social post on Friday, Trump said he was reacting to what he described as “highly provocative statements” made by Medvedev, who now serves as the deputy chairman of Russia’s security council.

Medvedev had slammed Trump’s sanctions threats and recent ultimatum to Russia, calling them “a threat and a step towards war.

In response, Trump declared:

I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

He added: “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Trump didn’t clarify whether these were nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines, leaving the global security community guessing.

Later, when questioned by reporters, Trump stood firm, stating:

A threat was made by a former president of Russia, and we’re going to protect our people.”

Medvedev, sidelined since Vladimir Putin's return to the Russian presidency in 2012, is known for his late-night rants on X (formerly Twitter)—often full of bizarre and aggressive takes on Western leaders.

This week, he blasted Trump for shortening his proposed timeline for Russia to make peace with Ukraine—from 50 days to just 10. Trump had warned of sanctions and economic penalties if Moscow failed to act.

Medvedev fired back:

Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10,” he wrote.

He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war—not with Ukraine, but with his own country.

He capped off the post with a jab at President Joe Biden, saying: “Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!

While some national security experts see Trump’s submarine deployment as more of a rhetorical escalation than an immediate military shift—given the U.S. already has nuclear submarines on standby—others see it as a dramatic sign of rising tensions.

Trump, meanwhile, has expressed growing frustration with Putin, accusing the Russian leader of dragging his feet on a ceasefire deal Trump claims he could negotiate in just 24 hours.

Russia’s attacks on civilians are disgusting,” Trump said Thursday.

Recalling a conversation with Putin, Trump shared at a White House event:

I go home and tell the First Lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.’ She says, ‘Oh really? Another city was just hit.’”

So far, Putin hasn’t responded to Trump’s ultimatum. On Friday, he expressed vague support for a “lasting and stable peace” in Ukraine but showed no willingness to compromise, even after another devastating week of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine.

We need a lasting and stable peace on solid foundations that would satisfy both Russia and Ukraine, and ensure the security of both countries,” Putin told reporters, just one week before Trump’s peace deadline expires.

Despite these words, Putin’s version of peace remains one-sided and unacceptable to Kyiv. Recent peace talks in Istanbul collapsed within an hour, yielding no progress beyond prisoner swaps.

Referring indirectly to Trump’s mounting pressure, Putin remarked:

All disappointments arise from inflated expectations. That’s a well-known general rule.”
